• A classic communication network architecture consists of three main components: data plane, control plane and management plane.
• Control Plane refers to the network architecture component that defines the traffic routing and network topology.
• Data Plane is the network architecture layer that physically handles the traffic based on the configurations supplied from the Control Plane.
• The Management Plane takes care of the network configuration, monitoring and management processes across all layers of the network stack.

In Traditional Network the control plane and data plane are integrated and system is completely dependent on hardware, propriety protocols and software. Moreover in this type of network, most of the configuration, updates and monitoring/tracking is done manually; Thus businesses face tremendous infrastructure, monitoring, managing and controlling issue while trying to scaling these networks. 

Whereas, all these issues are eliminated in SDN. As it decouples the Control Plane from the Data Plane and centrally integrates the network logic at the controller level. Separated controller provides users a flexibility to select which programmable feature can be switched from network device to controller or application server. The architecture abstraction layer allows controllers to manage traffic easily using open standards like Open Flow Interface. At the service layer, SDN manages infrastructure-wide organizational policies, systems and network applications. Protocols used in SDN are standard and this technology is based on software and API's.

Advantages of SDN technology:

• SDN decouples network configuration and traffic from hardware to complete and consistent control over network using open protocol approach.
• Its uses Open Flow interface, which have globally same standards for protocols, hence can be applied for controlling any Network edge to access switches and routers.
• SDN also enables network to connect directly to applications using API's.
• IT administrators using SDN can manage and provision their network services from a centralized point
• SDN has dynamic and flexible network architecture that can be modify or satisfy growing needs of businesses.
